“The How of Biblical Discipline”
2:30-8:00
“[starts by defining what the words mean]…or simply to punish. Inflict punishment especially corporal punishment. Now there are variations of these words. There is of course the variation of correction which is correct….correction is the correcting of a person by disciplinary punishment, chastisement, …somewhat archaic (which of course is what this use is) of corporal punishment….It even can mean, the word correction, flogging, which is whipping, with a whip, literally. The word chastening is disciplinary punishment or correction…its almost like circular definitions…Chastisement means authoritative correction of one who is at fault…and of course we’ll also come across the word scourge this evening, Lord willing. The word scourge means, as you would imagine, to beat with a scourge. Of course the Lord was beaten with a scourge….to beat severely, to whip with a scourge, or to flog. Now having defined the terms don’t be too shocked when the words may sound innocuous, there really a little more “potent?” [can’t quite hear the word correctly] then we may think…. Now why do we discipline biblically? …” [he goes on to talk about the “wicked world” will tell you not to spank, etc…]
11:20-12:25 (He talks about spanking here and what he means by it)
19:00-25:00
(Again he talks all about the verses behind his philosophy and talks about his philosophy of disciplining- some pretty bad statements- says you shouldn’t kill or permanently damage a child and says if you use a baseball bat the “kid could die, so don’t do that”)
24:20-24:50
“What tool should you use biblically? …. It’s called the rod of correction, not the rod of death, ok?...”
30:00-31:00
“…Now the Bible doesn’t say when to begin the process. I would recommend, this is my personal recommendation, as soon as possible. Little children demonstrate their sin nature very soon and a as soon as possible using the wisdom God gives you. You learn to correct those children. Some people put a certain age. I won’t put the age, but use your own judgment. If you have a really smart six month old or three month old or two month old or one month old you may have to start pretty soon, right? Of course you have smart children or grandchildren. Of course you do, so don’t wait too long. Now probably two days old might be a little early, but a, that’s the only concession I’ll make. Um, what is says is while there is yet hope.”
